Vinegar Tom

Vinegar Tom

“The devil can't bear to see us so good.”

Vinegar Tom is a play about Witchcraft in a rural Seventeenth Century community. It is also a play about oppression and rumour. Caryl Churchill explores situations where the label of “Witch” is applied to those who do not conform, who do not fit in to the neat little boxes that society has prepared for them.  Whether driven by misfortune or by the desire for their own Salvation, a cry of “Witch” is a cure-all and an excuse-all for every ill which befalls decent, every-day, “normal” people
